Montclair NJ House
We were hired to redesign the interior of a traditional Suburban 1940’s house, that had been clumsily modified with a faux-historic vocabulary. Phase 1 completed -was the Ground Floor. We kept elements original to the house, like the double-hung windows w/ divided lights (slightly re-arranged), the fireplace, and the radiators / covers, but all else was removed. Opening up several partitions gave us a more flowing, continual space, where we brought a simple, modern but contemporary design.
combining the old kitchen and dining rm gave us ample space - enough for this clever kitchen office, where the house’s best light and vibe are.
the fridge and equipment Core hides a walk-in pantry, that allows the spare and clean aesthetic of no kitchen wall cabinets, except where we want them in a controlled spot.
the house had an awkward, bulky structural column, and an odd shaped living rm that was reducing vital space, and the client’s just couldn’t abide. we came up with a great solution - replacing the column with a slender steel post that gets integrated into this shelving-credenza assembly, giving the living rm some definition and separation. the rear exterior was altered to make a simple rectangular space with a continuous window, maintaining the exterior’s integrity.
